60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAITLAND FLOOD
Today represents a significant milestone in the history of Maitland, with the city marking 60 years since it was at the centre of a major flood emergency.
It caused widespread damage, resulting in the deaths of 14 people.
The flood of 1955 transformed Maitland and led to the implementation of an extensive flood mitigation program, involving a system of levee banks.
Despite the measures, the threat of a major flood remains ever-present.
Tonight there’ll be a special commemorative event in Maitland, which includes a screening of the classic Australian movie, Newsfront.
