The Nature Conservation Council has also weighed in on Shenhua Watermark’s controversial open cut mine approval in Breeza, saying it’s unacceptable.
It claims it’ll place further strain on nearby Gunnedah’s koala numbers, which lost a quarter of its population in 2009 after a heatwave.
While the mining company has designated release points and offset sites, those habitats have been labelled sub-standard.
“While the company says they’re going to plant the trees that the koalas need to survive, those trees are going to take up to 10 years to grow. So where is the koala meant to go in the mean time?”
