MEASLES CASE ON THE MID NORTH COAST
The North Coast Public Health Unit has been notified of a case of measles on the mid north coast.
The young man recently returned to the area from overseas, where it’s believed he contracted the disease.
Public Health Director, Paul Corben, says measles are highly infectious to people who are not fully immunised.
“Vaccination with measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is the only way to prevent infection. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are recommended for children, with the first at 12 months and the second at 18 months of age,” he said.
Measles is spread through coughing an sneezing, with symptoms such as a fever, tiredness and a cough appearing before a red rash.
Anyone with symptoms is urged to contact their GP before arriving for an appointment.
