Police are investigating the cause of a fire, which destroyed a unit at Jesmond.
Firefighters arrived at Mayo Street at around 3:30 this morning, to find the ground floor dwelling well alight.
Fortunately the occupant wasn’t home at the time, and no-one else was injured.
Eight people had to be evacuated from the building.
