FIG FIGHT FAR FROM FELL

It’s still not over for the relentless campaigners trying to save the Laman Street figs.
They’ve exhausted all avenues through council and are now hoping Heritage Minister Robyn Parker will intervene
Finally some positive thinking on this issue. The wind study that was commissioned by the Council additionally had a mitigation to selectively thin, not lop, some of the tree canopy to reduce wind loads on the trunks which are the less susceptible part of the tree to direct wind loads.
Independent arborists have also suggested this mitigation, but their advice has not yet been accepted by Council. Much has been made of the claim that trees fell during Pasha Bulker, some of the Council’s reports recommending removal were written based on that incorrect premise.
However no trees on Laman Street fell during Pasha Bulker, three were cut down after some apparent movement was noticed with a crack at the kerb, a very small crack. This movement was deemed a tree failure to justify their removal, but again other professionals have strongly disputed this as a failure, those trees would have been able to heal had they not been prematurely removed. Since Pasha Bulker the Laman Figs have been tested by gale force winds and have remained strong. If by no other reason, the resistance of these trees to forces of nature should be evidence of their integrity.
