PIPER PULLS PRIVATE MEMBERS RAIL LINE BILL

Independent MP for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper has withdrawn his Private Member’s Bill on the Newcastle rail corridor because of a lack of support. He failed to get a commitment from either the Government or Opposition to support the Bill which sought an assurance that the corridor, post the planned truncation of the heavy rail line would remain in public hands and not be carved up for development. Mr Piper expressed his disappointment at the lack of support, but believes the door remains the door open to the Government to state its intentions for the corridor.
Premier Mike Baird has indicated that it is not the Government’s intention to allow heavy development on the corridor.
