CHILD CRITICAL AFTER CONTRACTING MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE
A child is in a critical condition in a Hunter hospital with meningococcal disease.
Hunter New England Health has confirmed it’s the ninth case this year, but says there are no links to any previous cases.
There have been two deaths from the disease in the health region this year.
Public Health Physician, Dr Tony Merritt, says seeking medical attention quickly may prevent the development of serious complications.
“Meningococcal disease may be very severe and the community needs to be on the alert for its symptoms,” he said.
Early symptoms may include pain in the legs, cold hands and feet and abnormal skin colour.
A high fever, headache and neck stiffness may develop later.
