WASHED UP WHALE CARCASS CAUSES SHARKS TO CIRCLE

An unpleasant sight for beachgoers at the Spit today, with the 20-metre carcass of a whale washed up on the shore.

Believed to have been dead a few days, parts of it had been savaged by sharks.

The cause of the whale’s death isn’t clear.

“Could be many things, maybe even old age. It’s a large animal and obviously it’s been in the water for some time.”

Lifeguards made an effort to move nearby surfers after a four metre bronze whaler shark was spotted in the shallows.
