FEARNLEY WINS 5TH NY MARATHON

Newcastle champion wheelchair racer, Kurt Fearnley, has won his fifth New York Marathon in dramatic style.

The 33-year-old broke free of the pack with 100 metres to go, to finish just one second clear of South African Ernst van Dyk in a time of 1 hour 30 minutes 55 seconds.

Fearnley has described the race as the toughest in recent memory, after having to battle strong winds which nearly forced the event’s cancellation.

“Today the marathon gods made us work extra hard which makes the win that little bit sweeter,” Fearnley said.
