GREAT LAKES COUNCIL BACKS NEW MERGER PROPOSAL

In a surprise move, Great Lakes Council has backed a proposed merger with Gloucester and Greater Taree City councils.
But the council’s support comes with a condition. It’s calling for a ‘merger blueprint’ to be developed.
“Council believes that, should a three-way merger proceed, it is vitally important to develop a strong strategy for a merger blueprint that will ensure the new council is appropriately structured for success and the delivery of efficient and effective services to the communities of the combined councils,” General Manager Glenn Handford said.
Great Lakes Council had previously resolved to stand alone, but Mayor Jan McWilliams says given the current political climate that option is unrealistic.
Council will engage an independent consultant to assist in its submission, while community information sessions will be held next week.
The state government is due to make a decision on proposed amalgamations by June.
