NEWCASTLE ALP STALWART DIES

Hunter political stalwart Arthur Wade has died, aged 95.

Mr Wade was a former alderman, Lord Mayor and the Labor Member for Newcastle for 20 years.

He served with the Australian Army in World War Two and became a prisoner of war, before returning home to become a shopkeeper at Carrington.

Arthur Wade cut ties with his beloved ALP ahead of the 2007 state election, when the party overruled the local branch pre-selection process, and replaced sitting member Bryce Gaudry with Jodi Mckay.

“I offer my condolences to Arthur’s wife, Heather, and his extended family. Arthur’s contribution to Newcastle and the Australian Labor Party was immense. His legacy of more than 40 years of service to the people of Newcastle will live on,” said Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon.

Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann has also expressed his condolences at the passing of the former Member for Newcastle, Arthur Wade OAM.

“He was a man of unshakeable principle and the community can be grateful for his dedication to the area when in public office.”
