WARNING ABOUT TOXIC SHELLFISH
The Department of Primary Industries has issued a warning about toxic shellfish near Newcastle.
It says an algal bloom, detected in waters off Stockton Beach today, produces diarrhectic shellfish poisoning toxins.
Residents are advised not to eat any oysters, mussels, cockles or clams taken from the area.
Cooking does not destroy the toxins.
The New South Wales Food Authority is monitoring the situation and says all shellfish purchased through commercial seafood outlets will not affected.
