– Nimbin’s museum and the iconic Rainbow Café have been destroyed in an early morning fire in the Northern New South Wales town. 34 firefighters fought the blaze. Investigators are trying to work out what sparked the fire.
– Hollywood actress Lauren Bacall has died, age 89. One of the leading ladies of the Golden Age of Hollywood, she suffered a massive stroke at her home. The mother-of-three was married to Humphrey Bogart until his death in 1957.
– Tony Abbott has refused to rule out military action in Northern Iraq, saying he’s not prepared to risk potential genocide in the region. Meanwhile, a helicopter carrying aid to people stranded on a mountain in Northern Iraq has crashed killing the pilot and injuring several others.
– And Controversial MP Clive Palmer is pushing for North Queensland to become its own independent state.
