City Evolutions kicks off tonight, with Watt Street already lit up with sounds, smells and sights.
Council, Newcastle NOW and the university are behind the project, which will see videos and still images projected on 10 buildings for the next year.
The lights were officially switched on at 5:30pm tonight.
We caught up with the project manager Victoria Johnstone and one of the artists who contributed to the display, Michael Killalea.
