A 268 megapixel eye on the heavens has begun operation at Siding Spring observatory at Coonabarabran.
The Skymapper Telecsope, built by the Australian National University to replace the Mt Stromlo telescope destroyed in the bushfires, will give southern astonomers the first wholesale digital glimpse of the southern skies.
