A former senior member of the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese has told the Special Commission of Inquiry he’d heard rumours circulating about paedophile priest, Denis McAlinden, in the late 1980s.
Father James Joseph Saunders acted as vicar-general to Bishop Michael Malone for more than five years.
Meanwhile, Father William Burston, who also worked for the bishop, began giving evidence this afternoon, which focused on correspondence with McAlinden in 1996, regarding moves to defrock him.
