PROTEST AGAINST HIGH RISE

Protesters have today rallied against plans to introduce high rise buildings into Newcastle’s CBD.

They say it will destroy the city’s charm – but Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy says they need to embrace change.

  1. We need to stop listening to these minority groups that are hampering development in Newy . It creates jobs and that is something that is needed in Newy. Let’s move forward and clean up this city

  2. The Lord Mayor has got it wrong here. China has a huge spiralling debt problem, which is a ticking time bomb. Asia’s population dwarfs Australia’s and they have a big problem of only the extremely weathy being able to afford the apartments, who in turn leave them vacant. This does nothing to solve housing issues or bring life and investment into a city. It really is a case of his own personal interest as a developer being disguised under the veil of working for the community as a Lord Mayor. Dont be blind to this Newcastle!

  3. I think the protestors are right. It’s not about being anto-progress, it’s about not believing that a 20-storey building is right for King Street in the city/ Let all that high-rise happen in the West End. Assuming progress=high-rise buildings is swallowing developer PR.
