HASTINGS RIVER OYSTER FARM IN GOOD HANDS

The sustainability of the Hastings river oyster industry is in good hands.
Today saw the launch of a local environmental management system.
An industry based initiative, it works on sustaining oyster farming and the health of the Hastings river.
It idenitifies weaknesses and risks in the industry, looks at pollution and growing methods.
It also acts as a guideline for local farmers.
The NSW Farmers oyster committee’s Mark Bulley said “The industry itself needs to have a look at itself and what it’s doing, it needs to review the way it handles things, one of the things I’d say in there in the not too near future you’ll see nearly all the outboards on the back of oyster vessels will be all four strokes.”
Mr Bulley says it’s essential to create cohesion within the industry.
