A Coffs Harbour rugby league player is assisting police with enquiries into a vicious assault on an English backpacker in the city.
Police say the alleged attack happened just before midnight on Saturday night outside the Coffs Hotel.
The 29 year old Englishman was allegedly headbutted and punched.
Inspector Darren Jameson said, “From the information we have at this stage, there’s definitely no provocation in relation to the assault and it’s a random assault it’s come out of the blue, it’s unprovoked and quite savage.”
The backpacker has since been released from hospital.
