More than 24,000 people packed Hunter Stadium last night for the opening of the Asia Pacific Special Olympic Games.
The Governor-General, Quentin Bryce declared the week-long sporting event open, during a star-studded ceremony.
Athletes will compete in nine sports across seven venues in the Newcastle-Hunter region.
The event will run until December 7.
