An angry residents alliance has vowed to remove Mayor Tom Tate from office, if Gold Coast Council refuses to back down on the decision to close Maudsland Tip.

Council voted to close the facility earlier this year.

  1. Thank you NBN for the article but it’s a shame you mentioned the ‘texting Tom’ without reflecting on why such a process would be necessary in the first place! This matter may appear to only be about the closure of a tip but what is fast emerging as the biggest issue here and the one that effects THE WHOLE Gold Coast Community is that the elected councillors and The Mayor who are there to represent the interests of their constituents are making decisions in closed meetings and refusing to properley consult with and even discuss matters with their constituents. What happened to democracy? If these people cannot get past their own agendas and do the job for which they were elected then they should be taken out of office!

  2. No mistake re Tom Tate’s mobile number. The number used is available online and the text messages sent were delivered. The number was also confirmed by an independent source.

I understand that your news team tried to call the number and it failed at the time… but then what do you expect when a phone is overloaded with 100’s of text messages.

Of course after the fact the Mayor will ALWAYS claim that the number is no longer in use and that the protest was ineffective…. we always expected that.

  3. This is a fundermental abuse of a core service that residents pay rates for. Industrial bins in our hinterland is a disgusting third world patch up and no way will we cop it .
Council needs to take notice of residents, leave the tip open, scrap the filthy wild dog feed bins. Suburban waste is totally different to rural green waste. Rural owners know how to maintain acres and reduce fire risks.
Wake up council…This is one fight you will NOT WIN!!
    RESIDENTS ARE UNITED!!!

  4. Residents are sick and tired of being TOLD, after the fact, not asked BEFORE!!!
Closing the tip is NOT AN OPTION and we will take the fight all the way until council wakes up and reverses its own stupid decision
Councillors are ELECTED TO REPRESENT THE PEOPLE
Start listening council…DO WHAT YOU ARE PAID TO DO! !!

  5. WOW……..what a turn out. Great to see so many angry residents come together to stand as a united front to take council all the way. As a rural resident we need our busy, well supported, local tip and it’s the only thing we get from council for our rates as we supply our own water and sewerage and have associated costs in doing so. Who do council think they are to decide on an issue without consulting us? Who do they think they are to put us at risk with safety issues with the implementation of kerbside on dangerous roads as indicated by local police? When are these guys going to start listening to their constituents? Or is it, to qualify as a councillor you must be deaf as well as stupid. They forget who pays them, but we won’t forget when we next vote.

  6. All the councillors that voted for the closure of the tip were all invited to come along including the Mayor. They did not come – they should have, they obviously don’t care.
I thought the councliers were here for the people – they should have been there to see how many people don’t wont this to happen and negotiate.
Everyone can make a mistake, it takes a bigger person to admit that so come on councliiers show us what you’ve got. Because I certainly am – I’ve never complained about anything like this before so watch out I’m not giving up, and that goes for a lot of other residents too. Bring it on !!!!!!!!!!

  7. Tate, you’re GONE at the next election, along with your dictatorship behaviour. You need to be dragged across the coals for this and the dozens of other disgusting moves you’ve pulled since in office like your bowls club land theft and the whole scam of the CST. You are hands down the most corrupt, greed driven snake-oil salesman self obsessed fool to ever make it into public office in the history of Queensland.

  8. We have a problem with wild dogs in Maudsland and surrounds now and the council won’t or can’t do anything how are we going to cope when they(the dogs) get worse?
The council does studies on everything so have they done a risk management study on the increase of wild dogs and vermin? Have they(the council) done a risk management study on the introduction of heavy vehicles on roads that do not support them?
When a child or person is attacked or menaced by a wild dog/dingo cross who is responsible? When there is an accident involving a heavy vehicle who is responsible? These scenarios can be prevented if the council listens and becomes a little more pro active instead of re active and stops flick passing the blame onto someone else.

  9. Many people fear the increase in wild dog activity and rightly so. I am of the understanding that the last baiting program in the area cost in the order of $500,000 and that the State Gov has estimated that any future program would be more like $2,000.000.

Council has TOTALLY ignored all the flow-on effects from their poorly costed and incomplete waste management plan.

This thing has been cobbled together just in time for budget, in order to present the people with some rosie numbers. (the fact that they are not a true refection of costs or savings is not important to council)

  10. I’m disgusted by Tom Tate and our Council. We do know how you manipulate votes, numbers and the schedule to get your way. I have never been politically motivated but I will be extremely active if it means voting you out Tom Dic Tator. I ask all Councillors to not be intimidated, bribed and follow him like mind less sheep for only your electorate. We are a team……..I remind you that you work for the people.

    Keep the Maudsland Tip open.
    No wheelie bins in Guanaba
    No Industrial bins in Guanaba
For the sake or safety, budget and wildlife. Just to mention a few.

Just for the record you new logo ‘GOLD COAST full stop’ is ordinary and a waste of OUR money.
Save our Spit please Gold Coasters. He can’t be trusted. He is not for the people and simply not smart enough nor forward thinking.

  11. 500 people turned up today to try and stop this tip closing. Not one councilor and certainly not Tom (Dick) Tator. He has already decided to close this tip without any prior notice or consultation with residents. He doesn’t want to hear any common sense or reasoning. He simply refuses to listen.

Our windy, narrow roads are dangerous enough for cars – add trucks, horses, wildlife and people and this is a recipe for disaster. As a horse rider, I am terrified at the thought of these trucks barreling along with nowhere to get off the road in a lot of cases. This is one of the few horse riding areas left on the coast – but this will also become a thing of the past as it becomes too dangerous.

Hopefully you will enjoy the Commonwealth Games Tom – as a paying spectator – because you will certainly not be getting votes from anyone in this area unless you man-up and admit that you are wrong.

  12. Awesome community action and more to come. It is inspiring to see that regular people believe in the finer nuances of democracy even if several of those in council appear to believe that democracy is merely might = right. This community is inspiring me again and again and again!

  13. Well said Sue
We are not a dumb bunch of hillbillies to be pushed around by self serving councilors and Tom dic tator
Interesting to note one councilor who voted to shut our tip has 2 in her division
Another voted to keep his own open…and shut ours down
OH YEAH AND WHERE WAS OUR OWN ELECTED COUNCILLOR YESTERDAY..??????
You know….The one who is supposedly fighting for us mere lowly residents…and collecting a fat pay check to boot
We are a UNITED COMMUNITY now. and we will fight…and take note council
YOU ARE ON NOTICE……WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THIS GARBAGE decision is reversed

  14. This is typical of Tate and the current council. They treat the entire Gold Coast residents with absolute and total disrespect. As for Councilor Tracey Gilmore, her not attending the rally is pathetic. This is just one of many problems rate payers are facing all over the Gold Coast. I will now sound you all a very real warning, Tate and his band of puppets careless about us residents. Tate cares only about looking after his international developer mates. He is out to destroy the Gold Coast. As a community we must band together to stop this man, his greed and total lack of respect. He and other councilors including Tracey Gilmore must be shown the door and clearly made aware they and others like them will not be tolerated by Gold Coast People. We want leaders who care and have the interests the Gold Coast represent us.

  15. Council are responsible for delivering practical rubbish services to ALL rate payers. We are not able to get bins up and down our steep 320m long easement and there is nowhere safe to put bins at the bottom – garbage trucks would have to stop on the crest of a narrow road to pick up our bins. Currently we have no issue taking our rubbish to the Maudsland tip. Council have not thought this out. Their solutions are plain stupid. Keep the tip open.

  16. Council should listen the people they meant to be representing.
As above So below. just as the council haven’t been listen to us, so the state don’t be listening to them and goes all the way up the chains… this is a power struggle.t
Tom Tate is a self serving slime bag taking money and bribes. I don’t like the scent of his energy signature.

  17. There will be NO compromise on our dump! Previous generations of residents, heritage family landholders and ‘effective’ councilors worked hard to provide that dump for future generations….that currently happens to be us! It will not be lost! Residents here aren’t going to allow our standard of living be lowered! By spineless & brainless short term decision makers who lie to us, misinform us, withhold information from us, misrepresent us, disrespect & ignore us!! We are patient….we will fight and we will wait….we can effectively campaign for a long time….and then we will VOTE!

  18. What a snake!
We have been lied to more than most in this area.
    When does common sense prevail?!
I use the tip for many reasons even though I have a kerb side service.
To take our tip away will create chaos in the Helensvale area and tempers will boil due to overuse of their facility
It can only get worse if the Mayor does not listen to the PEOPLE who pay HIS salary.
And the Islander Resort is a tip in the middle of Surfers Paradise that is old and run down.
Look after your own backyard Tom and leave us with what we now have. A safe site to deposit our rubbish and a community that uses it regularly.
Grow a brain and come to the tip on a Saturday /Sunday and see for yourself the amount of LOCAL people who USE/NEED this facility.
