A 59 year old logging contractor has died after being hit on the head by a falling tree branch at a private property near Lismore.
The man suffered severe head injuries in the incident at Whian Whian on Wednesday afternoon.
He was flown to the Gold Coast Hospital in a serious condition and passed away last night.
The work site has been the scene of an anti-logging protest for more than a month.
Police say they had to escort the ambulance through a protest group, impeding access to the site of the accident – an allegation denied by demonstrators.
The New South Wales Forestry Corporation has launched a full investigation into the accident.
