MEMORY WALK FOR ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA

At least 1,500 people are expected to take a walk down ‘memory lane’ on Sunday, as part of Alzheimer’s Australia’s Hunter Memory Walk & Jog.

The event welcomes participants from all fitness levels, ages and connections to those living with dementia.

Sarah Price from Alzheimer’s Australia says the event took off from last year and they’re expecting another big crowd.

“Last year we had 1,200 take part, so we’re definitely looking at record numbers this year, which is fantastic!.

The event is hoped to support Hunter Dementia resources.

“It is our hope that as this fundraising event grows, it will allow the Hunter Dementia and Memory Resource Centre to become fully sustainable and allow it to
maintain and develop the fantastic programs it delivers,” she said.

In NSW, there are almost 109,000 people living with dementia and an estimated 10,000 people in the Hunter region. However that number’s expected to rise to about 37,000 in 2050, in the Hunter Region alone.

“We hope that with such a large number of people coming out in support of such a great cause, it will help open doors to wider discussion about the issue and help people speak out about their personal journey,” said Sarah.

Registration online is now closed, but walkers/runners can register on the day from 7am at Speers Point Park.
