The Australian Rail Track Corporation says blue tarps seen on many carriages rolling into Newcastle today was NOT a trial to prevent coal dust.
The ARTC has shut down the rail network for four days for maintenance, and to upgrade sections of the track.
It says the carriage covers are to protect equipment.
Those involved in the coal chain network have been under increasing pressure to cover carriages, to contain dust.
