Even while Novocastrians paused to welcome the new year last night, work on the city’s heavy rail corridor continued.
Contractors spent the final hours of 20-14 installing signalling cables, panels and wiring near Railway Street.
Meanwhile, metal fencing was erected near Worth Place – the site of one of five new pedestrian crossings.
Last week, Save Our Rail campaigners won a Supreme Court bid to prevent the heavy rail line’s removal.
The state government is expected to lodge an appeal tomorrow.
