RETAILERS CAUGHT SELLING CIGARETTES TO KIDS

The North Coast Public Health unit says it’s disappointed with the number of retailers failing to request ID from customers buying cigarettes.
Figures from an undercover surveillance program were released today.
During the last financial year, nine shop owners from Casino, Kyogle, Bowraville, Grafton and Ulmurra were caught selling cigarettes to underage customers.
“Already this year in the small part of this year the sale to minors is about the 30 per cent mark on the Far North Coast – this is a really disappointing response.”
The maximum fine in New South Wales for an individual selling cigarettes to a minor is $11,000.
