LABOR RANK AND FILE TO VOTE FOR CHARLTON CANDIDATE ON SATURDAY

103 ALP branch members will vote this Saturday for a candidate for the federal seat of Charlton, which is set to be vacated by Greg Combet.
Among the five men vying for pre-selection is 37-year-old Marcus Mariani from Macquarie Hills, who works for the Defence Department.
“Charlton needs greater opportunities and I’m determined to see that happen. I know 5 couples who left the area to move interstate for work and someone needs to step up and generate that opportunity,” said Mr Mariani TODAY.
Marcus Mariani joined the ALP when he was 18, and says he’s glad the party isn’t parachuting a candidate into the seat.

The battle is on for Labor pre-selection for the federal seat of Charlton, with the challengers in full campaign mode.
They’re working the phones in a bid to win over 100 rank and file members, who will vote for a candidate in just over a week.
We’re still waiting for Kevin Rudd to announce a federal election date… but the pre-selection race is underway in the Charlton, after Greg Combet signalled his departure last month.
It’s expected to be a tight tussle between the main contenders – all young men – including Combet advisor Pat Conroy, who’s been endorsed by his outgoing boss.
(“I’m passionate about the local area, I think i have a good knowledge of the local issues and deep understanding of how Canberra works, which makes me a good candidate.”)
Joshua Brown has a similar background, having advised former Charlton MP Kelly Hoare and then state MP Jodi McKay.
(“I’ve served an apprenticeship with a number of member of parliament and a minister, currently working in local government… I was raised in Morisset, grew up in the area – deep connection with the area.”)
Union organiser and Lake Macquarie councillor Daniel Wallace, from Macquarie Hills, is another considered a strong chance.
(“I received a number of calls I should put my hand up, I’ve asked to put my hand up before with council – been on council 5 years and I’ve represented the Labor party.”)
Community campaigner Chris Osborne has also thrown his hat into the ring for the pre-selection ballot, to be held on Saturday week.
State MP Sonia Hornery has decided not to run.
