KIRRA GROYNE EXTENSION BEGINS

Mayor Tom Tate has announced work is underway to restore our world famous Kirra break.
He says Council can’t wait any longer, after the state government refused to help with the cost of his beach protection plan.
Seems pretty obvious to me that the groyne extension will simply fill up greenmount to make it an even broader beach as the gold coast continues to grow into the ocean. The long walk from the kirra surfclub to the water is far less attractive than the old photos that show the waters edge much closer.
Councils have made the same mistake in perth where what was ordinary surf by the most optimistic of assessments has been reduced to closeouts that come down in 100m chunks from triggs to scarborough. the cause of this is what they claim to be sand dune restoration but is in fact sand dune creation as they build land forms that were never there in the first place as opposed to allowing the natural seasonal migration of sand.
My observations at cooly and kirra over the years is the same has occurred there (though the quality past and now is still far superior to anything we get in perth).
Let nature take its course – dismantle the groyne and let the wave wrap around the point into the cove!
