HUNTER STREET OPTION FOR LIGHT RAIL

Whether light rain will run along Newcastle’s Hunter Street or the existing heavy rail corridor
is being investigated, according to Newcastle MP Tim Owen.

Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy is in favour of the Hunter Street option and has written to State Treasurer Mike Baird.

Mr Owen says that idea, which would see a return to Newcastle’s former tram days, was already on the government’s radar.

He said, “We could have light rail down Hunter street – we could have it ducking in and out of the corridor… You want to have transport system where you want majority of people to be, we’re trying to revitalise Hunter street particularly.”
