TWEED COUNCIL PUSHES FOR REFERENDUM ‘YES’ VOTE

There are fears direct Federal Government funding for council roads and projects will be under threat – unless residents vote ‘yes’ in the upcoming referendum.

Tweed Council has received millions of dollars worth of black spot and Roads to Recovery funding, as well as money for community facility upgrades over the years.

But the Mayor says recent court cases are putting direct funding at risk.

“It’s means funding would have to be subject to the endorsing of the state government, so would not only insert another level of government, involved in that decision but also additional politics, into that decision.”

The proposed referendum will coincide with September’s Federal Election, and could see constitutional recognition of local government.
