Kyogle councillors called for a moratorium on coal seam gas mining, during their monthly meeting last night.
The unanimous decision comes after community concern over the potential impacts the practice could have on local water supplies and the environment.
The council will now write to the state government, calling on it to halt drilling until independent research is available.
