GAV’S BLOG: SUNDAY’S SUPERMOON

This Sunday we will see a very big full moon rise over the horizon. It will be the closest it has been to Earth in 18 years, so it will appear 16% brighter.
The forecast is looking good to witness it in all it’s glory. We’d love to see your best full moon shots on Sunday night so I can put them on the air next week.
The event is set to coincide with the formation of a deep east coast low. The centre of the low should be off Sydney before moving to the south. On the northern side of an east coast low is where you want to be. The broadcast area will only be affected in the way of cold SW winds.
The low is going to generate another epic swell for experienced surfers for the entire coast. Because the moon is so close to Earth the gravitational pull will be slightly stronger so the tides are going to be big. This could cause some coastal erosion.
Super moons have been linked to major disasters. Conspiracy theorists love them.
One of the theory’s is this.
The tectonic plates are constantly moving and pushing against each other.
The pressure keeps building and building until one plate is forced up the
other down resulting in an earthquake. Some people believe that the extra
gravitational pull caused by the moon helps create a tipping point triggering the
event, such as the Japan tsunami.
Most of the worlds scientists disregard this theory.
No matter what, it is going to be a fantastic weekend for camping. Nights will be
cold but well illuminated from one of the brightest moons in a life time. Enjoy.
