The Department of Primary Industries says it won’t know for days just how many fish have died in the Hunter and Williams Rivers, but the figure is easily more than a thousand.
The mass kill is now being officially called a ‘blackwater event’, with experts saying recent flooding has led to a lack of oxygen in the water.
