MAN UNDERGOES SURGERY AFTER SHARK ATTACK

A man is undergoing surgery following a shark attack on the New South Wales Mid North Coast yesterday afternoon.

The 31-year-old man was spear fishing off the headland near Green Island, which is a protected grey nurse shark habitat.

He was swimming back to his boat – holding a fish – when a grey nurse shark approached.

The man was bitten on his right knee, before the shark swam away.

He was treated for minor puncture wounds and was taken to Kempsey Hospital.

He was later transferred to Port Macquarie Hospital.

  1. What an idiot!! Who in their right mind would tie an big piece of bait to his weight belt and drag it through a shark sanctuary… Unfortunately the shark didn’t take a big enough bite!!

  2. Why do you feel the need to conceal the facts. Stop deleting comments outlining that he was illegally spearing in a grey nurse protection area with a slit and bleeding fish on his belt. You are scare mongering

  3. been spero’s running the gaunlet for awhile up here past few months ,just photographed a turle dead/ caught in nets floating back putting plenty of sent about. Mullet have just begun a run in the river [plenty of whalers/mullet sharks follow these shoals of fish.Dont blame the poor old Nurse Shark,my money is on Bronze Whaler though i don’t have much info to work on.By the way a common wobbiegong will attack if blood/vibration are in the water !

  4. Absolutely beautiful place to dive, and the Grey Nurse population there sem to have no interest in the divers, well at least not from my experience there. Swimming with them with food on your belt might not be considered overly smart though (if thats what happened, i wasnt there), the shark was just doing what comes naturally, by the sound of it. That being said though, hope he is alright.

  5. Hey SWR diver, where was he diving? Can you tell us some details (you seem to know what happened). Was it in a ‘no spear zone’ since not all GNS protection areas are no spear zones. I’m interested since its the second reported GNS attack this year (the last around port stephens in feb). Did he have fish on him or did he have a float and rigline? Cheers.

  6. To the know it all above. spearfishing is still allowed at the grey nurse sites just not allowed to burley and where this event took place is not one of those 2 sites anyway so kindly crawl back in your hole and shut up

  7. To the RUDE know it all above. If you want to Spear around areas that are known for GNS and get bitten thats too bad. Its a risk you have to accept.
Aftrer all the dives ive dont at SWR the GNS are nothing but peaceful to dive with.
so kindly crawl back in your hole and shut up

  8. I was spear Fishing off Lagers Point SWR on 31/11 friday a legal spearing zone visibility was 20-30 metres when i saw a 6 foot school shark swim past my catch bag and float I gave him a push with the butt of my gun and he took off .some times I wish that the 20 metre rope to my catch bag was a bit longer. Probably wasnt a grey nurse shark ?
