HEALTH DISTRICT WARNS OF LEPTOSPIROSIS OUTBREAK DUE TO MICE

Hunter New England Health is warning residents of possible Leptospirosis outbreaks, as the mouse plague in the state’s west worsens.
Wet weather has seen populations increase, and in turn – the risk of bacteria spreading.
Symptoms are typically flu-like, but the disease can lead to kidney failure and liver damage in more severe cases.
Infection can be prevented by regular hand-washing, wearing footwear outdoors and disposing of rubbish.
