Defending champion’s Merewether have survived a scare in Round One of Newcastle cricket.
Hamwicks belted Waratah, new captain Brett Jackson scored 84 in Wallsend’s win.
No luck for Toronto or Uni, the Lions got home against Cardiff-Boolaroo.
Despite the loss, Richard Green’s knock of 72 overshadowed the debut of Merewether’s David Celep and Mark Cameron.
Celep made a bright start, but Green had his measure, dispatching him to the fence on several occasions.
As for Cameron, the former Australia-A paceman was a little frustrated, exchanging several words with Green mid-pitch.
In the end, Green won the battle, Merewether won the war.
