NEWCASTLE LORD MAYOR JOHN TATE RETIRES

Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate has announced he is retiring from local politics, after 13 years in the top job,and many more as a councillor.

Councillor Tate has been tight lipped on his future, delaying the announcement until nominations for September’s election closed this morning.

“This is not an easy choice for me because I love local government, it’s been my life for 13 years, Cathy and I have put our heart and sole into the job.

He says he wants to leave on a high and spend more time with his family.

“I’m leaving it while I love it, my heart is telling me to stay, I beleive I could win this position again in this next election but my head tells me to get on and do other things.”

He has been a member of the council for more than 30 years and missed out on being elected to state parliament in 2007 and 2011.

  1. Have always liked John Tate. He saved Stockton Caravan park way back in the ’80’s which made him very popular with the residents. He seems very pleasant and cares very much about Newcastle. Will be sorry to see him go, but he also needs to have family time now. Good luck John and Cathy

  2. This is a late posting, but very important. I was an apprentice technician at Automatic Transmission Services owned by John Tate ( and his then father – Cedric and Mother – Alma) John and his family guided me from a humble beginning as an apprentice mechanic through to a Branch Manager of his company. Through the family’s guidance I progressed to not only running 9 UK based Service and Parts Departments in Sydney Metro, but on to running a Toyota ( Japan) based branch in Tabubil Papua New Guinea as the highest Ex Pat Manager in the Oktedi Gold and Copper mine in PNG . My point is these achievements were only possible because of the incredible leadership of John , his father and mother. Newcastle in my opinion is loosing a matriarch of leadership and will be sorely missed. Jeff Hardyman proud former employee.
