MERMAID BEACH EYESORE TORN DOWN

After years of sitting derelict, Mermaid Beach’s ghetto of vacant, graffitied buildings is finally being demolished.

Much of the site has been destroyed by fire with Council now stepping in to negotiate with financiers to tidy up the place.

“We pride ourselves, the GC, as the tourist capital of Australia and if we don’t have these places looking like that well forget it. We’re trying to get people back and get tourism going again.”

The future of the land is currently being negotiated, but it’s hoped it will become a mix of residential and commercial areas.

Local Councillor Paul Taylor is pushing for height limits along the strip to be raised to five storeys.
