A man has been fined over $12, 000 in Byron Bay Local Court today, for operating an unsafe and unapproved backpacker hostel in the Byron Arts and Industrial Estate.
The man was charged after council conducted a surveillance operation on the property, following a number of complaints from the public.
It’s believed the landlord was charging backpackers $150 a week for accommodation – without providing smoke detectors or access to fire exits.
