WEATHER UPDATE: CHILL OUT ON MOTHER’S DAY

Gavin Morris has the latest details on what we can expect weather wise this weekend.

Today was warm but fell short of the forecast maximums so major records weren’t broken. It was the warmest May day in the Hunter since 2007.
The abnormally high temperatures are thanks to an approaching front. During the past week it has been very clear across Central Australia with light winds. This allowed the heat to build. When we get an approaching front from the SW it funnels that warm air from the NW flushing it down the Hunter Valley. When this happens during the Summer we see fire dangers soar.
I hope you enjoyed it because a powerful cold outbreak is on the way. The first wave will come through on Saturday the 12th. It will remain very warm in the NE. A second stronger front will back it up and this will drive north some icy cold polar air.
Mothers day will be very cold for the Hunter with the mercury dropping through the day to the north as the system pushes into SE QLD. We will see the freezing night time temperatures return to the Tablelands followed by cold, clear, windy days. On the bright side we will keep our glorious sunshine until the middle of next week.
