  1. John is my brother whom has been known as a mental illness patient for at least 15 years on the Gold Coast.

Unfortunatley the only rehab or councelling John has ever received were more drugs and a monthly injection. Although he has had case workers but they gave up years ago. Pumping him full of drugs is a far more easier solution for the Government/Doctors.

Once he leaves the psych ward at Southport Hospital or Robina Hospital after up to even a few months there is never any plan for his councelling to adjust back into society. If people with these mental and drug abuse problems aren’t guided more they soon lose their way and a continuous cycle evolves.

Solution? very difficult as we all know they must help themselves but sending them back onto the street or if they have a home is not the answer. The amount of money the government has spent on John with incarceration and hospital etc etc medication etc etc special benefits surely there must be a better way.

John has been diagnosed on many occasion with a mental or drug problem. I cannot see how someone like John will ever rehabilitate himself when he is allowed to self medicate with the amount of drugs he is provided.

In a country as large as this, rather than send people like John to jail or lock him up in a hospital ward for months on end and pump copeous amount of drugs into him surely a farm environment where he can learn something would be better away
from the easy access to drugs and alchohol where there is temtation to steal to fund his addiction.

John has had a terrible life but unfortunately he has never had the chance to find himself. John would have been far better off out in the country where he can spend the time to truley rehabilitate. Somewhere where he can get a licence find independance. Something as simple as learning how to use power tools or weld and then before he is released back to society there is a part time job or something for him to look forawrd to.

I do understand that it isn’t as simple as all of this but if the Government doesn’t understand that the current sysyem isn’t working maybe they should go and live with the families with a John in it.

I believe with the increase in the use of drugs in society and the break down of the family structure these problems are only the tip of the iceberg.

So far John has never hurt anyone as far as I’m aware and more than likely is the one that gets hurt. I’m worried that something like today could have ended up a lot worse. Let’s see how long he’s put in hospital this time. My family tell me he is very sick at the moment. The dose will be increased and I believe he is going to court for petty crimes therefore will be put in Jail.

Surely the young people in the future that will suffer from similar issues deserve much more!
