URUNGA HIGHWAY PROTEST

Around 200 demonstrators have staged a noisy protest in the mid north coast town of Urunga, highlighting their concerns over the delayed upgrade of the Pacific Highway.

The protest follows last month’s tragic collision, which claimed the lives of an 11-year-old boy and 38-year-old man.

  1. Despite reassurances from police that there is a presence, I have seen no evidence of monitoring and enforcement of the late night heavy vehicle traffic around and through Urunga. Last night I went for a look, and the first truck I encountered, at 3am, came through Short Cut Road intersection at 95 kph, as if the 80 kph speed limit didn’t exist.

This is still a very dangerous intersection, as all locals know, 24 hours a day, which is why it is speed limited.

We NEED better ENFORCEMENT, at Urunga, Warrell Creek etc, otherwise the tragedies will just continue to happen.
