REGION’S ROAD TOLL INCREASES

Police say it’s been a disappointing start to the new year for the northern region, after wrapping up their biggest annual road blitz overnight.
Seven people lost their lives on roads between Port Stephens and the Tweed, during Operation Safe Arrival which began on December 23.
Police say it’s an increase of four deaths compared to the same period last year.
A record 17,000 breath tests were conducted, with 95 people arrested for drink driving, 20 less than last year.
Speeding fines also dropped slightly with just over 1,300 drivers charged.
