SERVICE HONOUR LONG TIME COMING

It’s been a long time coming, but there was recognition today for a former Australian serviceman, involved in one of New Zealand’s most difficult peacetime operations.
Lake Macquarie resident, David Armstrong, helped out following the 1979 Mount Erebus plane crash.
An Air New Zealand Antarctic sightseeing flight crashed into a steep snow-covered peak, killing 237 people.
Mr Armstrong led a team tasked with recovering bodies and personal effects from the scene.
Today he was presented with the New Zealand Special Service Medal.
