The Howzat sports centre at Cooks Hill has been temporarily closed amid asbestos concerns.
Newcastle Council says it received a number of complaints from the centre’s members, who claimed asbestos was falling from the ceiling.
Compliance officers took several samples of the material, and Howzat’s owners have shut the facility down until tests are conducted.
The results are due on Friday.
