Even some racing greats have given the event their tick of approval, but say they’re disappointed by the actions of some.

  1. Can I just say that I was protesting today for a sqillion reasons. Like most protesters there I have a job, do not smoke pot and do not condone rock throwing. There has been no evidence of rock throwing and Mikko Hirvonen who was in the lead denied seeing any rocks thrown as well. If it was done it was probably kids.
The protests were kind, very cool people brave enough to stand up and defend their homes. Look at Sebastien Loeb’s website. He even says how cool we were. He spoke with quite a few off us and was very apologetic.
Its a shame that many locals the rally were frightened to protest, and I don’t blame them considering the type of people supporting the rally. They were abusive and threatening, throwing things and some even swerving into the protesters. Well done to the brave residents who stood up to this bullying! You rally fans could learn some manners from drivers like Loeb.

  2. Good call Someonewhocaresaboutthe Earth! I too was there and experienced the same. Were you at the alternate closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon? At one point there was a rare and profound moment. Many of the pro rally group had stopped on the other side of the road and were actually listening to our speakers. Yes there were a few yobs going past, but about 50-60 were actually taking time to listen to Cr Katie Milne as she addressed them as well as us, reminding us of the biodiversity value of the region being equal to Kakadu, and that we come in peace and that we are fighting for all of our rights. All the speakers were very compassionate and it was almost as if some of those rally spectators suddenly realised we were not the enemy, we were people who cared. I wish someone could have captured that, or given that media coverage, far more important than how fast a car can go round a track.
