4 METRE GREAT WHITE SHARK CAUGHT OFF CITY BEACH

img00058-20111020-1444.pngA four metre Great White has been caught in a shark net off Newcastle’s Bar Beach.
The shark was taken to the Newcastle Fishing Co-op and then transfered the the Port Stephens Marine Research Centre for further analysis.

A spokesperson for the NSW DPI says the Shark Meshing program aims to reduce the risk of shark attack on some of the State’s most popular beaches.

Since its introduction in 1937, the program has been effective in helping to provide a safer environment for swimmers and surfers.

The program involves using specially designed nets along 51 beaches from Newcastle to Wollongong, where the majority of people in NSW swim and surf.

The nets are not set as a barrier but rather as a netting technique that deters dangerous sharks from establishing a territory and reduces the risk to swimmers.

This program is very successful. There has not been a fatality in over 50 years on a meshed beach.
