A by-election in the state seat of Clarence, is expected to be held before the year is out.
It follows the sudden resignation of Nationals MP Steve Cansdell on Friday.
Mr Cansdell stepped down, after admitting he faked a statutory declaration relating to a speeding fine, six-years ago.
The Nationals have now begun their search for a candidate.
It’s believed they’ve approached Clarence Valley Mayor Richie Williamson, who ran as an independent in the March state election.
Labor and the Greens have also expressed interest in running candidates.
