EGG PRODUCERS WARNED OVER ANIMAL CRUELTY

The state government is warning local egg producers to comply with new cage standards or face tougher penalties.
It comes after the RSPCA found a number of farmers failed to meet the new standards, including several in the Tamworth area.
The laws came into effect on on the first of January.
They involve the introduction of larger cages with more floor space and height to improve the welfare of layer hens.
Minister for Primary Industries, Ian Macdonald, says most producers have invested heavily in new cages, however the department will be forced to strengthen the penalties if others don’t comply.
The maximum fine is $2,750.
