Lake Cathie has been opened to the sea for the second time this year.
The heavy equipment moved in early this morning to begin the task of digging a channel through the sand, which had built up in the past month.
Flooding of the foreshore caused by last week’s heavy rain prompted Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to give the order to artificially open the lake.
The water level in estuary had reached 1.7-metres, inundating the footpath and posing a threat to low-lying homes.
